Dontbeinthedark exists because of one sentence we kept hearing: I wish I'd known that earlier. People say it after missing a hearing date they never saw, signing a lease that renewed itself, or paying a caller who sounded exactly like their bank.
The worst time to learn how something works is after something has already gone wrong. So we try to explain it before.
Who it's for
Anyone dealing with an unfamiliar system for the first time: young adults signing their first lease, parents sorting out a teenager's ticket, older adults getting calls they're unsure about, small-business owners reading a contract, and families handling paperwork after a hard week. We write from South Carolina, with a lot of attention on Horry County, Conway and the Grand Strand, but most guides apply across the U.S., and we flag what differs in Canada, the U.K. and Australia where we can.

- We don't give individual legal, medical or financial conclusions. When a question needs a professional, we say so.
